Prologue
I returned with Serene in my arms, and she, in turn, brought me—a mere mortal—into the realm of the immortals.
She married The Elder, then tried to betroth me to his celestial hound.
'Sierra,' she said, 'you're just a mortal. Marrying The Elder's spirit pet is already above your station. Once you bear pups, they can even become spirit companions for my children.'
But I didn't want that. What good was marrying a celestial hound? No matter how they dressed it up, it was still just an animal.
I only wanted to cultivate and become immortal myself.
Serene, however, thought I was dissatisfied with her, that my intentions were impure and I wanted to seduce The Elder.
Enraged, she called down heavenly fire, burning my entire township to ashes, then flayed me alive and cast me into Hell's Den.
When I next opened my eyes, I had returned to the day I first found Serene.
Her divine core was within reach.
I thought, some who are born gods perhaps don't deserve it.
